How to Manually Update WordPress by Using FTP

Automatic updates are done by WordPress to a small release without having any input from user. To make major updates, notification is done by WordPress showing that update is available and it can be initiated by just making the button clicked. Sometimes you could encounter a situation where updating from WordPress could not be possible.

The following information could give details on how updates are done on WordPress manually.

Making the site available for update

The first step required is to have WordPress as backup.  You can do backup of WordPress on manual basis if you do not have rights to the admin area of WordPress.

Once backup is taken, fresh copy is downloaded of the new WordPress from the site named wordpress.org. It is downloaded to your desktop and then from the zip file, files are extracted from the archive. You could find inside the folder named WordPress inside the zip file.

Use of FTP to upload the files of WordPress

wordpress-ftpUsing your FTP client, you can connect to your website. Once you have connected with FTP client, you can use the root directory of the website. Then you need upload into the folder, WordPress files from the desktop to the root directory of the website.

Once done, the FTP client will then start getting the files uploaded from the hosting server on the web to your computer. As a part of the update process, you will be prompted with a message stating that the existence of the file in the directory and you need to perform an action by the FTP client.  You need to select the option to overwrite and get the box checked to perform this action.

Getting the database of WordPress updated

 There are always changes in the database of the WordPress.  Changes are done through releases done by WordPress. You would require updating of the database. Once files are uploaded to the website, you need to go to the admin section of the WordPress. WordPress would depict the updating of the database that requires notification.

You need to proceed by clicking on the button that states to update. Once database is updated, you will be shown a message by WordPress which explains as success. Finally you have accomplished your idea of updating WordPress to the new version.

You need to always keep the WordPress updated to the new version. There are cases when some environments of web hosting can create problems for automatic updating of WordPress.

To get the latest WordPress version downloaded

You can get the latest WordPress downloaded y either going to the website www.wordpress.org or going to the administration in the WordPress and clicking on the option Update to the version and downloading the option known as download.

It is to be noted that you require having backup created for your WordPress files before you plan to update. This can help to restore the site if any problem occurs. Do see that a separate folder is created for downloading of WordPress and a new folder where you could download the latest version. This could help to keep everything organized and you could get back to previous version if backup is created.

By deleting the wp-content, you are ensuring that by mistake you do not overwrite any of the themes or plugin if you plan to update the process. If you plan to upload the files of WordPress using FTP,  you need to use the version that is modified and uncompressed from the file that is upgraded and downloaded to the folder of WordPress.

This is to be noted that WordPress download does take longer time than the method cPanel as in the process, each file is downloaded one by one to the server. Whereas in cPanel method, you could download the files that is in zip format and which contains files that is to be extracted inside the server and by making the old files replaced.

Some fast steps to make WordPress updated

  2. Then you need to compress the zip file of WordPress
  3. Remove the folder named wp-content for the purpose of installation. Do not delete the folder.
  4. Then open the FTP client and move to the live site and WordPress folder for installation on your computer.
  5. Select the files that are required for installation of WordPress. Then choose and drop them on the server that is available remove and start the process for uploading.
  6. Complete the upload process.
  7. On your browser, look for administration of WordPress. Select Dashboard button that is found. WordPress will understand the files. Suppose there is database available for updating of WordPress, you will be moved to another page where updating is required. Once you confirm, WordPress will update the database.

As it sounds, updating of WordPress is not difficult as you think.
